From the Baron & Baroness,
Greetings! Warmest wishes for a happy and healthy new year to one and all. We hope you all had fun with families and friends during the past month.
As the holidays ramped up and folks focused on gift buying and feasting, SCAdian activities slowed down or went on hiatus. With the new year upon us, it is time to kick things into gear again and get back into parrying, blocking, throwing, shooting, dancing, sewing, calligraphing, and all the other wonderful myriad things we enjoy in this hobby.
We look forward to Kingdom Twelfth Night in our sister group, Hartstone, where gentles will show off their latest gorgeous court garb and former Thescorrean Rhiannon y Bwa will declare whether she will join the Order of Pelican.
We thank the members of our noble baronial orders for their wise counsel and will enjoy inducting new members next month at College of Three Ravens. We appreciate your time in sending in your polls so speedily, and we welcome recommendations for future pollings.
While on the subject of our longtime winter event, we gently (well, okay, sometimes not so gently!) encourage readers to consider teaching a class, especially if you have not done so before. C3R is an especially supportive and relaxed environment, and teaching is fun! You don’t have to be an expert in a field to teach—trying doing a 101-type overview, or hold an open forum to have a discussion and share knowledge on a subject. Katja will be co-teaching a completely new topic this year, so this will be a scary but neat new challenge for her.
Speaking of trying things outside your comfort zone… please consider checking out a new activity this winter. There are so many fascinating and varied things to do in the SCA, and many of us tend to stick to the things at which we’re good and where we know the participants. Never tried archery? Amble over to Brockport some Sunday afternoon where you will enjoy Cedric’s kind patience and snort-inducing dry wit. Always asking or paying others to sew your garb? Check out the threadworkers at one of their next monthly meetings where you will be well-fed and Matilda will quietly but surely show you how you *can* do that tricky stitch or stuff that self-fabric button. Love to eat but don’t know how to cook? Pet Dillygaff at Cauldron Bleu while Bryn confidently shows you the best resources for preparing a yummy feast (but watch out if she hands you a paring knife and a quince!). Never touched a musical instrument in your life? Poke your face into a dance & drum practice and it’s assured that Carlo will have you figuring out dhums and teks in no time.
There’s a lot of fun to had out there. Go have it. :-)
