From the Baron & Baroness

Pennsic
As we’re sure many of you do, we have many good memories from this past Pennsic:
  • seeing Daedra elevated to the Laurel (and watching her eyes pop and most of the kingdom go “Huh?” when the Mathom was presented);
  • playing in the Rapier Woods Battle with the Khan & Khatun right after a friend was inducted into the White Scarf;
  • playing board games with friends by candlelight & camp lantern late into the night as rain falls outside the tent;
  • listening to Meadhbh singing a powerful song about Khalek winning Crown and then watching her amazed delight when she was announced the winner of the Seven Pearls bardic competition;
  • hanging out in Thescorre camp during the heat of the day and sharing stories;
  • maniacally enjoying a look at a brand new, huge translation of a 9th Century Persian cookbook; and
  • enjoying an impromptu hafla that sprouted in our camp one evening for several hours, complete with rugs for dancing and the band Ishtar!
One special, good but bittersweet memory is of watching the sun set over the lake and the stars fill the sky as flames from a burning boat heralded our goodbyes to a dear friend, Ulric.

Over 100 gentles from all walks of the SCA – Thescorre, Moritu, the Scarlet Guard, Pennsic Staff – ringed that lake in respect and honor… hugging, weeping, and even laughing quietly. There are no words for the continued sadness at his passing, or the loving peace that followed the ceremony. We miss you, Ulric. Be well.

Accolades
With a thrown weapons royal round score of 104.6, Athos has achieved the rank of Marksman – as of this writing, the highest score in the kingdom! Vivat! (Is there going to be a Ludicrous rank soon?...)
On the final night of Pennsic, Phelan proposed to Mairead in Thescorre camp while sitting around the campfire, to the delight of everyone watching and, of course, Mairead. Congratulations and may you enjoy a long, happy, and healthy life together. Vivant!
On the last day of August, Vettius & Dehka exchanged wedding vows in a wooded grove at Richard & Suzanne’s estate. Congratulations and may you also enjoy a long, happy, and healthy life together - vivant!
The Fewmet staff and their lovely artwork was recognized a record THREE times in the Society-level William Blackfox awards – vivant! Many thanks to Portia for alerting us to this so early.
Vivant and congratulations to Talia for her orange spoon; Phelan, Mairead, Richard, and Eldjarn for their Raven’s Eggs; Dehka for her Raven’s Feather; Carlo, Juliana, Ruaridh, and Cadifor for their Broches, Eilionora for her Sojourners gift; and Vettius on his Black Talon.
Vivat also to former Thescorreans Aine for her long-deserved Keystone and Ekat for her Pelican!

Caidin’s First Birthday
Has it already been a year since he rushed into this world a month early, we asked ourselves? As all parents know, it is a delightful and wondrous experience to watch the galloping speed with which children grow up… not to mention smush birthday cake into their faces, nose, ears, hair, belly, high chair… We are thrilled to have a ringside seat to this show. J

Seven Pearls Archery at Shote in the Wildewoode
After traveling to the event with Eldjarn & Katrina, we enjoyed a great, laidback event in Delftwood at the end of August: hanging out, shooting the range, and cheering on Eldjarn in the interbaronial competition. He shot well against the kingdom’s best, and we were most happy to see Thescorre represented so honorably and proudly. We enjoyed a great dinner afterward with many friends from both Thescorre and Delftwood.

House Vettii Wedding
Just as Thescorreans had magically transformed into Mongols for this reign, they suddenly became Romans for this special day: everywhere we looked, we saw a sea of crimson and white chitons, pallas, and togas. Richard & Suzanne’s wooded grove, completely enclosed from the house and road, gave the Roman ceremony an otherworldly ambiance – even with some gentles attending in modern dress, it was a truly lovely and spiritual experience. Kudos to Carlo & Juliana for the thrumming drum rhythm that swirled through the festivities.

Half-Way Mark Feedback
This summer has marked the mid-way point in our baronial term. Acting on specific input from members of the populace upon our investiture two years ago and since then, we have:
  • attended most kingdom Coronations and Crowns, as well as Twelfth Night, Ice Dragon, Pennsic, and all Thescorre events;
  • attended nearly all barony meetings and several diverse practices so that we are approachable and active;
  • taken up fighting and thrown weapons in addition to our common martial activities of fencing and archery, participating alongside Thescorreans at Pennsic in various battles and ranges;
  • accepted any who are interested to serve as our retainers while we sit in Court;
  • polled our baronial orders twice each year and awarded numerous baronial accolades;
  • scheduled our baronial champions competitions at a stand-alone event and begun holding it annually; and
  • supported our champions in each of their 7 Pearls tourneys against the other kingdom champs.
We need to hear from you: How are we doing? What are we doing well? What could we do better and why? We were elected to represent you, to lead you, to cheer you across Æthelmearc – what should we consider for the next two years? We very much appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.

Eric & Katja
