Meeting Notes

7/15/2008 Thescorre Curia
Adams Street Center
Eldjarn, seneschal
29 Thescorreans present

1. Pax Interruptus Report
We had over 226 attend the event, Eldjarn reported, and everyone seemed to have a very good time. “Feast was under budget, so we’ll make money,” Bryn added with a smile. Overall, the campground was very happy with us once again and eager to have us come back next year.

2. Officer Reports
Herald: I have forms available for submissions. Fridrikr reminded everyone who is interested in getting their name and/or device passed.

Baronial Chamberlain: Reporting for Orianna, Fridrikr said the office has been quiet since the last event, and she has new tablecloths.

Threadworkers: The members are all busy with their own projects, so we haven’t met lately, Matilda said.

Chirurgeon: Phillipe said he worked at several recent events, and donated a first aid responder kit on behalf of the barony to Gytha. He needs to restock some kits.

Heavy weapons: We continue to have practice on Monday, and there have not been any injuries or issues. Vettius has been absent from practice for the last several weeks due to severe back pain.

Archery: We’ve had very good turnout lately on Sundays, with 10 to 12 gentles shooting each week, Eldjarn reported for Cedric. We’ve been doing royal rounds at noon for an hour, followed by regular practice at 1 p.m. to train new people.

Thrown Weapons: Things have been going well, with up to five to six people showing up, Athos said, and no injuries or issues. We’ve been switching from Fridays to Sundays every other week. Since we’re not going to Pennsic, we may hold practice while others there.

Fencing: We’ve been holding practice twice a week, Yasmina noted: Mondays at Adams Street Center and Thursdays at Genesee Valley Park. We’ve regularly been having three to five people show up. There were several authorizations over the past two months, including Their Majesties and Sigvaldi. Eric held a marshal-in-training clinic at Pax, which about a dozen fencers attended. There will not be any practices from July 24 through August 15.

A&S: Stuff is still going on, Kadlin reported, but the arts are more individual right now rather than group based, for the most part. Several gentles painted the new barony gate for the Pennsic encampment at Phelan & Maired’s home. The social meeting in August is cancelled, After Pennsic, she hopes gentles will lend her their class handouts so she can add them to the arts archive.

Chatelaine: We held an educational demo at UR that went really well, Sigvaldi said. We didn’t have a lot of new people at Pax, but Baronial Champs had quite a few new people. (Katja added that a newcomer from Champs, Steve, has been coming regularly to thrown weapons practice.) We are planning another newcomers night for August 15th at Phelan & Mairead’s home starting around 7 p.m. The theme is persona development: how you developed your persona or the lack thereof, whether you’re on your second or fifth name….

Chronicler: Sorcha reported that the Fewmet won the kingdom’s 2008 Sylvan Quill competition for best electronic layout & design, best artwork – Caradawc’s September 2007 cover, and honorable mention for artwork – Mairghread’s July 2007 cover. Upcoming issues could use more artwork, pictures and articles from the populace, though. Anyone willing to write a short monthly article, or even a single time one, would be HIGHLY encouraged to do so.

Web Minister: The website is still running, Donal reported. Thescorre’s site has received compliments for being one of the more informative local sites. <grin> Not much has changed except normal updates. The total overhaul has been put on hold until time suddenly stops and it can be done. Ok, at least until we find time to do it. :) The Yahoo Group has had 20 subscriptions and four un-subscriptions since the beginning of April.

Steward: We have stuff, it lives in the basement, Steffan reported. There is actually an current list of stuff that the barony owns. I will get it up on Thescorre website when I figure out how.

The road signs are living in the garage right now - they were muttering something about "we are outdoor devices and the basement is too cramped and we miss the scent of motor oil and gasoline". (They are a bit damaged after all). So, I let them stay in the garage. They do note that they are lonely because there are only six of them now, and that it might not be enough of a crowd to be able to handle directions to an oddly placed site. We are actually working on getting some new signs, so that is a good thing.

The basement is full. The garage is over-stuffed. The Barony has too much stuff, and a lot of stuff that the Barony has never used. I do not actually want ANY new stuff without it having a designated purpose and storage.

Exchequer: We have $2,775.10 in checking and $3,161.08 in savings, Alina reported. Since our last Curia, the Barony has held three events: College of Three Ravens, Baronial Champs, and Pax. .C3R made a profit of $8.03. Champs had a profit of $82.17. The event report for Pax isn’t complete, she said, but she anticipates a substantial profit.

Youth Fighting: Eldjarn noted that we had some youth martial activities at Pax: a gentle named Donna McTavish offered to run it, all seemed to have a great time, and appreciated the time and space to do it.

Seneschal: Everyone is gearing up for Pennsic, Eldjarn reminded, but we need to start thinking about C3R bids; we’ll need to make a decision at the September business meeting. There are two vacant offices: chancellor minor and historian.

Baron & Baroness: Since February, both or one of us have attended 11 events, Katja reported, including four the populace specifically requested we attend: Coronation, Crown, Ice Dragon, and Æ War Practice.

We’ve held three barony courts at the three local events, at which we awarded two Broches, one Black Talon, and one Raven’s Feather, and recognized several gentles for their good works with Raven’s Eggs.

We named five new baronial champions and then attended three 7 Pearls tourneys (A&S at Melee Madness, rattan & rapier at War Practice) to support those champions in their interbaronial competitions.

We both participated in the del sewing circle, and Katja participated in the UR demo. We’ve attended half of the fighting and fencing practices, most of the choir and cooks guild meetings, and some of the thrown weapons practices. Katja intends to attend more archery & thrown practices and some of the scribal, brewing, and dance practices in the next year.

Eric calligraphed & illuminated a Silver Alce scroll for Talia and performing with RavenSong, while Katja taught a Turkish garb and medieval spices class at C3R and led roundtable discussions on frugal feast preparation at War Practice and Æ Academy. Eric is the reign’s discussion list owner, while Katja has been retaining for TRMs.

Cauldron Bleu: At the last meeting, Bryn reported, Katja walked those present through the thought process for preparing an out-of-area feast, since she plans on having a teaching kitchen at Fall Coronation. We need to make vigil cookies for Pennsic for Daedra’s laurelling! Bryn added that she is in charge of coordinating food for the AEthelmearc party, and urged gentles to please donate food. The guild will meet later in August, since many will be at Pennsic during the regularly scheduled meeting, and she hopes to discuss the cooking classes everyone attended. Future guild meetings will include how to make period breads, vinegar, gingerbrede, and mustards. Katja asked for some special guild sessions to prep for Coronation.

Court & Country Dance: A small group has been regularly showing up, and we are practicing some new dances for Pennsic, Eldjarn reported for Peregrine. Next week’s practice is cancelled due to everyone preparing for Pennsic.

Middle Eastern Dance & Drum: Carlo said Dehka is back from Egypt, where she shopped and danced and had a wonderful time. We do plan to drum at the AE party. Informally, some of us are going to attend the second weekend of the Hawk Creek demo, so come in garb for ambiance, dancing, and drumming.

MOL: [Editor’s note: Eldjarn said he got a report from Bronwyn, but unfortunately this sleepy reporter does not have it.  ]

Coffee Report: It’s too hot at the meetings now, so the Coffee Overlord says there’s no coffee right now. He was pleased to report that we now have a Pennsic Coffee Boy (Phelan).

Jesting Report: “We have humor, it lives in our barony,” and Carlo went on from there…

Scriptorium: The industrious and talented scribes have been doing several baronial and kingdom scrolls stuff, Katja noted.

Brewers: We had an awesome party at Pax, Sorcha said, which was well appreciated. The brewers are donating stuff for the AE party, and there will be random parties/tastings at Pennsic. Please check the schedule for the brewers roundtable.

3. Pennsic
Fridrikr noted that there will be four evenings of bardic at AE Royal, while Alison asked for volunteers for shifts at the kingdom’s hospitality table and Orianna still needs guards for the gate.

Sigvaldi announced that the Main Game demo is on July 26, which unfortunately is during Land Grab. It would be nice if we could get enough people to show up for fighting and dancing, if possible. He asked for participants, and if he gets enough he will confirm on the Yahoo list whether we’re going. Katja asked Eldjarn to talk to Joe after Pennsic about us offering to do another demo at another time of the year as our annual payment to the recreation center, since the Main Game’s and Pennsic’s dates have both changed to, unfortunately, coincide.

Pennsic is in 11 days, said Mick, the barony’s land agent. Negotiations are going well, and he expects us to get our full land allocation for the first time in years. There will be 4,500 feet of space on the block for single campers, so first come, first serve. He thanked Phelan for coordinating the potluck, gate, and shower.

Phelan thanked all who volunteered to offer dishes for the potluck. He asked that anyone bringing food to the potluck try to get it to camp by 5:30 so we can start eating at 6 p.m.

The gate should be done tomorrow, he said, and added that he went a little over budget: he had estimated $120 to 150, but the final cost was $211. Richard donated over $80 of materials to the gate construction, since he miscalculated some small portions of things. The gate went through some iterations, but no one has to lug an eight-foot-tall gate anymore – it’s bulkier, but the pieces are only four feet long now. The camp shower is a go; Phelan said he went over budget on that, too, so it’s just a simple cabana with propane. However, we will have clean Thescorreans! The camp kitchen coming together; talk to him if you want to donate anything.

Katja noted that she and Eric have posted the schedule of Pennsic battle musters and other barony activities on the Yahoo list. Anyone who wishes to retain or otherwise participate is welcome.

4. Policy proposals
Peregrine has delayed submitting a rewritten policy change until the November Curia.

8/19/2008 Thescorre Business Meeting
Adams Street Center
Eldjarn, seneschal
17 Thescorreans present

1. Pax Report

We had a total attendance of 224 and a profit of $524.49, Eldjarn reported.

2. Officer Reports

Herald: Fridrikr said a couple of people submitted devices/names at Pennsic, and there have been a few more this month. With any luck, at Christmas Bronwyn will be trained to be the next herald. He added that he is planning on stepping down at that time, both from paper and court heraldry.

Heavy: There have not been any significant injuries or problems at practice, Vettius said.

Exchequer: We have $2,636.56 in checking and $3,161.75 in savings, Alina reported. She has finished the mid-year report, which shows we have a loss this year so far of $739.59 (which includes the profit from Pax) due to several costs this year. She reminded everyone that she needs a deputy. She attended the Pennsic exchequer meeting, at which she agreed to be the NY regional exchequer in addition to the baronial one. (This isn’t a conflict of interest, as she’ll simply send her reports directly to the kingdom officer.) Vettius asked what was involved in becoming a deputy…

Rapier: Yasmina applauded five Thescorre fencers for participating in the Pennsic “Tiff” points (since it wasn’t a War), including our Khan and Khatun, in the rapier woods battle. Padraig is continuing his training to be the next rapier marshal, and marshaled the novice tourney. Yasmina ran herself ragged being rapier captain of the Queens guard, and is glad to be home resting. Three fencers have shown up at practice so far this month.

A&S: Sigvaldi reported that Kadlin has a new deputy, Dubheasa of the helium hand. The next social meeting’s topic is to discuss the classes you took at Pennsic, so please bring copies of your class handouts to the meeting.

Chatelaine: We were scheduled to participate in the Main Game demo, Sigvaldi said, but there was a lack of communication from the rec center, plus most people preferred to spend the time packing for Pennsic. He commented that the dates of the demo and the new dates for Pennsic make attending the demo just not feasible anymore.

Eldjarn noted that he spoke to Joe earlier in the evening, and said he’s fine with us doing some other demo to pay the rent, such as a demo here at the rec center with fencers, fighters, drummers, and dancers. “Pretty much the same as we normally do for practices, just with advertising and some information.” He added that he also wants to know the date of martial demo earlier this year so gentles have more time to plan to participate.

Siggy welcomed some newcomers from the newcomers night last Saturday at Phelan & Mairead’s home: two new gentles (Andy, his wife Kristin, and son Carter) and one transplant from An Tir (Alianora). He praised the newcomers night for going pretty well and having great food, although parking was a problem because there was a festival in the neighborhood. The next newcomers night is scheduled for the end of November, and Siggy asked for volunteer homes – perhaps Saleem & Sadira, Khalek & Branwyn, or Vettius? He noted that there have been requests for another newcomers night already, as we have several new people, including an old high school friend of Siggy’s. Katja mentioned that Steve has been showing up fairly regularly at thrown weapons practice at Athos’ home.

Thrown Weapons: Speaking of TW, Siggy announced that Athos scored over 104.6 last week and thus achieved the rank of Marksman!! It’s the highest score in the kingdom right now. “Right after he did that, I broke one of the butts,” Siggy laughed. Siggy is a TW marshal-in-training, he added.

“We continue to throw sharp, pointy, and sometimes dull things at my home,” Athos reported. The practices rotate from Friday to Sunday every other week, and are announced on the Thescorre list serv a few days beforehand. We have many new throwers, but no injuries or incidents to report.

MOL: Bronwyn had nothing to report at this time.

Chirurgeon: Phillipe said he tried to give his paperwork to Constance at War, but has nothing else to report.

Archery: Practice is happening and it’s good, Peregrine reported for Cedric. Strangely, last practice was raining and yet heavily attended…?

Web/Chroniclers: Not present and no report.

Steward: Steffan was not present to report, but Katja noted that we need to schedule a day/time to clean the barony equipment in his basement, perhaps cull some for a raffle to raise funds for the barony?

Phelan noted that the new barony camp shower in his basement, while the new gate resides in House Trillium’s storage down at Pennsic. Katja thanked House Trillium once again for their very kind housing of the gate.

Seneschal: Eldjarn was not able to attend kingdom Curia at Pennsic, but learned about the meeting afterward. The main agenda items were:
• changing the kingdom law so that the king who will be doing the War reign will name the warlord;
• changing marshalate law to clarify that marshals don’t dictate the result of a bout;
• a Grand Council discussion about recruitment and the possibility of getting corporate help for recruitment; and
• the complexity of getting a background check and approval for running youth activities.

Eldjarn added that Katrina has agreed to be deputy seneschale, and he is looking for a deputy exchequer. Adams Street Recreation Center will be closed next week, so we will move dance practice to Hutchinson Hall at UR.

He noted that gentles from the southern region of Thescorre are setting up an extra fight practice at Geneseo College. He has asked Thomas to send directions to the list serv so that those who want to participate can do so.

Baronage: Katja and Eric again praised all Thescorreans for the wonderful work we’ve all done in the past year supporting Khalek & Branwyn as Khan & Khatun.

She reported that they had held a short Thescorre Court on Friday morning in Hartstone Camp (thanks to Yasmina for being emergency backup herald) and inducted Vettius into the Order of the Black Talon. Vivat!!

She congratulated Dehka for her ORF, Carlo, Juliana, Cadifor, and Ruiaridh for their Broches, and Daedra for being elevated to the Laurel! Also, congratulations to former Thescorreans Aine for her Keystone and Ekat for being elevated to the Pelican.

There was a lengthy silly discussion about the Mathom’s wanderings after Æ Court Tuesday night, with someone reporting that it went through the royal encampment faster than it ever had gone through a camp before, hitting every tent in the camp before ended up right back with Their Majesties! Seeing Richard was confused, Katja explained the history of Thescorre’s … beloved?... gift-that-keeps-on-being-given.

Court & Country Dance: Peregrine reminded that we will be dancing at Hutchinson on the 27th.

Cooks Guild: Katja said she plans on making mustard and starting to make bread dough for Fall Coronation. All cooks are welcome at her and Eric’s home next Tuesday night

3. College of Three Ravens

Eldjarn noted that he is seeking event bids, and hopes we will have one to vote on next month. Please let him know if you are interested.

4. Miscellaneous

Dubheasa shared news of an upcoming concert: Mystic Mediterranean Rhythm of the Ottomans, Friday August 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Irondequoit Town Hall’s Performing Arts Center gazebo, 1280 Titus Avenue. Sponsored by the Turkish Culture Society, it appears to be a historical Ottoman marching band and is free.

Phillipe said that Nigel is moving to Thescorre from Hartstone, and is interested in taking the historian position.
