Ulric & Katrina
Katrina asked to speak before the meeting opened, since she knew many gentles wanted to know about Ulric’s condition and she would like to disseminate the correct information without repeating herself.
Both of them got nasty colds around Thanksgiving. While she recovered after a week, he continued to be ill and it developed into pneumonia. He wouldn’t go to a doctor’s office despite her repeated requests over the next couple of weeks.
On Sunday, he asked to go to the emergency room. He was conscious and able to put on his own boots when the EMTs arrived. He passed out, however, in the ambulance and stopped breathing when they arrived at Highland. His heart stopped and it took the EMTs 10 or more minutes of CPR to get it started again. Once in the ICU and fitted with a chest tube, he was heavily sedated so that one lung, which was filled completely with liquid, could be drained and he could be treated with heavy antibiotics to prevent sepsis (full-body inflammation/infection).
Katrina clarified that he did not have a heart attack – his heart is strong and he actually has low blood pressure, much to her and others’ surprise.
Ulric is still in the ICU and is no longer sedated, but he is “being ornery” and has not woken up. He had one possibly non-involuntary reaction right before she came to tonight’s meeting, which she hoped was a positive sign, but only time will tell. She cautioned that there is the very strong possibility that he has brain damage or that he may never wake up.
She said she very much appreciated everyone sending all the warm and cuddly thoughts and prayers her way to support her… and encouraged everyone to mentally tell Ulric he was an idiot for letting himself get so sick, to send annoyed thoughts his way so that he would wake up. “We need to irritate him as much as possible!”
Katrina has been in the ICU every day all day long since Sunday, and plans to continue being there for the near future. Friends are welcome to visit if they wish; however, only two visitors are allowed in the ICU at a time.
She is extremely grateful for all the support and offers of help she has gotten so far, and will let folks know what she needs when she has an idea of what she needs. She will post updates to the Thescorre list when there are any changes. Otherwise, Devon and Katja have been coordinating phone calls and contacts for her, so please call them.
1. Officers Reports Exchequer: We have $3,457.37 in our checking account and $3,119.20 in our savings, Alina reported. She added that she’s completed the event report for Rapier Academy. Royalty Chamberlain: Orianna is seeking donations of the following: plain white table cloths in good condition; red napkins or other red table linens; blue napkins or other blue table linens; red, and blue or white candles and candle holders (both "open" and "closed" flame varieties). She will consult with Steffan to see what tablecloths are already in the baronial stores inventory, but feels she need more in preparation for College of Three Ravens.
She asked for a small budget of $50 to $100 to buy some since red and white things are on sale now during the holiday season. Collette noted that The Christmas Tree Shop in Henrietta sells inexpensive red, white, and gold tablecloths. Orianna added that Their Highnesses plan on attending C3R, but Their Majesties will attend White Hart in Port Oasis. Those present voted 17-0-2 to reimburse Orianna up to $100 for linens, napkins, and candles. Chroniclers: We are seeking articles, comics, games, puzzles, and/or anything you would like to submit for the Fewmet, Sorcha said. Did you teach a class? Attend an event or meeting? We know you have opinions, so please share them.
We are hoping to get the Fewmet on its proper schedule of being available on the first of the month, she added. For now, in order to wean into it, we are asking that all submissions be submitted by the first of the month. Webministers: “Is there anyone out there willing to submit a monthly report with updates of awards and recognitions received by members of the Barony for the website?” Sorcha asked. It’s difficult to keep track of these, and she’s going back to college in January (for graphic arts and printing) so she won’t have as much free time.
There is now a Ravensong webpage on the Thescorre website, courtesy of Eilionόra. It’s listed under “Activities.” Chatelaine: Dubheasa is stepping down a year early, so this is her last report. (Sigvaldi will fill out her term.) She still gets emails almost daily from new folks wanting to know about the SCA and Thescorre. She still has the Gold Key collection in her attic, and it may stay there a bit longer if Siggy and Kadlin can’t find room in their home for it. Chirurgeon: We have two new chirurgeons in training, Phillipe announced: Colin and Fauna. Colin is a NY-state licensed EMT, he added. Gordon is now a full chirurgeon. (Vivat!) Phillipe is working with Carlo on a chirurgeon webpage for the Thescorre website. He said he thought it would be useful to buy some chirurgeon-in-training kits, so that they and future CITs would have their own supplies, and mentioned some kits that were $40 a piece. Sigvaldi suggested looking at Red Cross lifeguard first aid belt pouches, which have most of the necessary items (gauze, CPR mask, Ace bandages, bandaids). Sorcha pointed out some similar first aid kits at Wal-Mart that are $20 a piece. Peregrine suggested that Phillipe put together a list of exactly what items he thinks the CIT kits need, then present it at the next meeting. Rattan: Phillipe spoke for Vettius, who was unable to attend the meeting. The fighters are considering holding some practices on the Tuesdays that aren't the social or business meeting, and holding practice on the normal Monday nights on the other weeks of the month. Sigvaldi explained that several fighters have other commitments on Mondays and therefore either haven't been attending those commitments or Monday nights' practices. Rapier: Several fencers from Delftwood and the Hael visited last week's practice, Yasmina reported. Phillipe is a new marshal in training, and he entered a fencing tournament last week -- going as far as the semi-finals!
We have new fencers, she said happily, but unfortunately we can't arm them because we need stuff, "So can I have some money?" After reviewed the loaner gear for Steffan's inventory, she noted that we have "lots of small-head masks and small-neck gorgets" but not anything for larger gentles, plus eight pairs of gloves that are barely list-legal if covered with a LOT of duct tape. In addition, we need hoods to cover the masks. She presented a wish list with price quotes from Zen Warrior (formerly Triplette) and Fencing.net for varying numbers of foil, epee, and schlager blades, gloves, masks, hoods, and gorgets. The numbers ranged from $591 to $735, without shipping. There was a brief debate as to whether to buy everything from Zen Warrior (an established and well-trusted SCA fencing merchant) or some things from a new, untested site, Fencing.net, with those present agreeing we should support the trusted SCA merchant.
There was some discussion as to whether we could make the gorgets and hoods, and buy only the blades, masks, and gloves; Yasmina didn't mind if that happened, but it needed to be coordinated and she needed folks to help make it happen. Sigvaldi said they needed at least two gorgets very soon (him being one of the new fencers that needed one). He suggested that someone like himself or Vettius, who know how to make armor, could run a workshop to make one gorget for themselves and a loaner one for the barony. Orianna asked if there was a hood pattern and if it was difficult to sew, noting that it could be a project for the Threadworkers after the holidays. Caradawc suggested having a gorget- and hood-making class at an upcoming social meeting. He offered to run it, but heeded the strong suggestion of his wife that he had many other things on his plate.
After removing the hoods and gorgets from the proposal and recalculating the total costs, Yasmina asked for $597 plus shipping for the blades, masks, and gloves. Those present voted 19-0-1 and approved reimbursing her up to $650 for the order. Arts & Sciences: All of the guilds have been meeting regularly, Kadlin reported, and she happily reiterated that Ravensong was active again. She asked for ideas on what gentles would like to do at social meetings: if we're mostly going to just schmooze, do we want to meet in garb and bring refreshments or have potlucks? If we want presentations, do we want classes or more group projects and if so, how long should they be? Thirty minutes? An hour? Two hours? She asked for folks to discuss it on the list. She also thanked her deputies and asked them to help her a bit more than before since she's having more and more "baby brain" as her pregnancy continues. Seneschale: Thescorre did not win the Coronation bid, Peregrine announced; Riverrouge's bid for April 12 was the winner (northeastern Pennsylvania, near Endless Hills). Orianna mentioned that she checked out that group's online photos of the site, and said it's absolutely amazing! It's a summer recreation camp in the Poconos with heated pools, a huge outdoor amphitheater, tennis courts, riding rings, etc. Since Their Highnesses want to support and encourage equestrian activities, she's not at all surprised They selected this site.
There are three baronial offices that expire in January: archery marshal, herald, and chronicler. Peregrine thanked the current officers for agreeing to continue in their positions.
There hasn't been any formal announcements on this yet, Peregrine continued, but there may be a new group forming to the south of Thescorre. (Essentially, the land between us and Hartstone, Orianna noted.) They are in the very early stages of development, deciding heraldry, suggesting zip codes, polling everyone living within those zip codes, asking for a nearby group to sponsor them, etc. Once she has more information to share, Peregrine said she will keep everyone informed. Baronage: Katja read a very appreciative letter that she and Eric received from Their Majesties thanking everyone who was involved in Their Crown Tourney for doing such a nice job. She and Eric did not attend last weekend's Hael Investiture due to the weather, but expect to attend Twelfth Night in a few weeks. She plans to attend Heralds & Scribes at the end of next month.
2. Rapier Academy
We lost $118 on the event, Yasmina said. Considering that it was a first-time use of the site and there were some problems, that's not too bad. She reiterated that many folks expressed interest in using the site again, including other groups, and that the owners were happy with us and would like us to use it again. Plus, it could be used for a Society-level event, Known World Academy of the Rapier (KWAR).
3. College of Three Ravens
Caradawc had nothing specific to report yet, other than he will need a copy of the insurance to give to the site owners. He asked if the event announcement appeared in the last AEstel, since his house may have eaten his copy.
4. Tonight's Coffee
It's organic decaffeinated breakfast blend, Carlo announced, so if you don't like the nasty flavor of decaf you won't taste any in this. He thanked Sorcha and Donal for bringing hot water, tea, and hot cocoa mix.
5. Guilds Dance & Drum: We haven’t met lately due to weather and health, Carlo said, but we're still schedule to meet on Mondays with the fighters and fencers here at the rec center. There is no practice for the next two weeks, and we'll begin again in January.
Carlo added that the newly invested Baron Caleb of the Hael thinks AEthelmearc is "strangely quiet" bardic-wise, and so is issuing a tax on all bards who visit his barony. He would like folks to contribute songs, stories, dances, juggling, etc. both during feasts and spontaneously during the day at events.
Threadworkers will meet Sunday, January 6 at 3 p.m. at Orianna’s to continue working on the kingdom banner and plan projects for 2008. Bring a dish to pass.
Cooks Guild: Only two gentles have responded to my survey as to what they want to learn or do at Cauldron Bleu, Bryn said, so if no one speaks up I may schedule Cooks Guild only to bake cookies. Collette immediately asked that the guild meetings for the next two months help her do menu planning and food prep for C3R.
Scriptorium/Heraldry: The December meeting was cancelled. We will meet to do heraldry in January, Collette announced.
Brewers: We need to schedule our next meeting, Sorcha and Eldjarn agreed. Katja asked Eric if he wanted a baronial brewing champion…?
6. Baronial Champs
Sigvaldi is preparing a bid to hold Baronial Champions Tournaments on May 24 at Diane's home in Hemlock. She and her husband have a sizable amount of land and they're willing to let us hold an event there. There's both flat and wooded land, so the fighters and fencers can have battles in the woods if they wish. He will need the current champions to plan the champion tourneys, with the exception of Decimus since Their Excellencies are allowing him to serve a full term. (There will be rattan activities -- maybe a warlord tourney? -- just not a champions tourney.) He is proposing a dayboard for lunch and a possible potluck for feast. There is a large firepit for a bardic circle, and a large garage that might be useable for the A&S competition.
The site would be free, so the event costs would be pretty low -- a portapotty rental, etc. The date is the weekend after the normal AE War Practice date.
Yasmina has agreed to be Sigvaldi's mentor, and Caradawc and Pleasance have also agreed to offer advice if needed. Sigvaldi plans on presenting a formal bid at the next business meeting.
7. January Social Meeting
Kadlin noted that the next social meeting is January 1; should we cancel that meeting? Someone suggested rescheduling the meeting to the following Tuesday, but then it would conflict with Cooks Guild. Bryn said she wouldn’t mind if Cooks Guild met at the social meeting and shared the date. After some discussion, the social meeting was cancelled for January.
Responding to Kadlin's earlier request for social meeting ideas, Yasmina commented that we used to hold mini A&S competitions at the social meetings. Maybe we could organize those again, either as works-in-progress or preparation for Ice Dragon?
8. Demos
Dubheasa announced that her workplace, Alternatives for Battered Women, is planning a fundraiser for May 8 with the theme A Knight to Remember. The nonprofit would like medieval dancers, drummers, etc. to provide ambiance. It will be at Ontario State Beach in Charlotte. Dubheasa is working with the organizers to tweak the menu so it is more period!
Orianna thanked all those who participated in the gift-wrapping demos at the Victor Borders Books for the last two weeks.
9. Miscellaneous
Sigvaldi and Ash are considering holding a Khan's Invitational event for His Highness… |
