5/20/2008 Thescorre Business meeting
Adams Street Recreation Center
Peregrine, Seneschale
31 Thescorreans present (including two babies)

  1. Baronial Champs

“Everything is going well, all we have to do at this point is finalize the schedule,” Sigvaldi reported regarding the event this coming weekend. Siggy said he still needed a few pavilions for changing, troll, court, etc.; Yasmina, Eldjarn, and Katja offered some. Apparently, Fridrikr has amnesia and forgot he volunteered to be tollner… Bryn reported there will be extra Cooks Guild meetings this week to prepare for lunch. We still need more pies for dinner, Collette said, so contact her with the ingredients ASAP, please. They don’t have to be period recipes, but those are welcome. Siggy added that if anyone needs any barony equipment from Steffan’s basement, tell him now. He reminded everyone that staff is welcome to camp Friday night, while Saturday is open for camping for everyone.
Peregrine said that the event announcement was published in the Fewmet, so it is a legal event even though it was not printed in the AEstel; she confirmed this with Caryl. She offered to forward the event announcement to the AE Yahoo list in case gentles out of area want to attend. She added that she’d talked to Teresa about the snafu with submitting the event announcement to the AEstel; she reported that anyone who uses the online event form must not leave any blank spaces (enter “N/A”) or it may not submit correctly.

  1. Signs

Diane brought some samples of the bumper stickers she and Tom print, which are made of a plasticized cardboard called Flexacore. They hold up very well to wear and tear, she explained. We need to know how many the barony would like, what size they should be, if we need road signs more urgently than stickers, etc., she asked.
Peregrine replied that we needed the signs more urgently and she had checked with Steffan, who said we need 4 to 5 new double sided sandwich-style road signs, and he suggests that they be shorter than the current ones so they will fit in more cars more easily. He advised not creating ones that stick in the ground, since we don’t always have soft ground available where we need to place the signs. He had requested $50 plywood, 2x2s for legs, some hinges, and chain. Diane said that Tom can do sandwich signs. Steffan had also asked for the new signs to have movable arrows; some of the existing ones have these, while others have ones stuck on with duct tape. Diane said Tom could make them with Velcro, but Eldjarn warned that a prankster could change the direction too easily.
Yasmina suggested Tom and Diane check out the current barony signs this weekend when we set them up for the event at their home. Fridrikr moved that we draw up a spec sheet for the expected cost of the signs in the next two weeks. Those present approved the decision 21–0–2.

  1. Pax

Plans are also going well with Pax, Eldjarn said. He'll start asking for help after this weekend, such as for food, trolls, and pavilions.

  1. Pennsic

The deadline for preregistration is June 15, Mick reminded everyone. We have about 15 to 16 gentles signed up for the barony encampment, including some new people, so we're bigger this year than in several past.
Phelan had some ideas for the Thescorre encampment, including sprucing up the gate, using his sink, and building a shower. He drew his design on the nearby chalkboard: a door on a frame that could be hung on the current gate with rope and grommets, decorated with a large raven, and constructed of fabric so it was light and easy to transport. With the help of the Threadworkers or as a social meeting project, he said, it could be done in time for Pennsic.  After some more discussion, those voted to support Phelan's idea, pending him providing a quote of the materials needed and cost by the next social meeting, and approved the idea 23-0-2.
Phelan and Maired offered the encampment the use of their own camp kitchen this year, which includes a 60,000-BTU stove, a six-foot table, and a pavilion. He agreed to take the discussion offline so those staying in the encampment could consolidate needed equipment.
There was extensive discussion on building a baronial shower, with Phelan suggesting he could buy a small cabana (as the outside of the shower) for $20 on Craigslist. Gentles debated heating options -- inline water heaters, solar, and propane -- with most agreeing that Coleman heaters not being a good choice. Phelan offered to provide an estimate for that project by the social meeting as well. There was some discussion about whether to pay for the projects and maintenance (such as propane) fully out of barony funds (Fridrikr's idea) or whether the maintenance should come out of a camp fee from those who live in the encampment (Phelan).
As someone who is often exhausted and in pain from fibromyalgia, Carlo said, anything that makes Pennsic more comfortable is really appreciated!
Katja agreed that improvements to the barony encampment to make it more comfortable and impressive is A Very Good Thing. She asked, however, that if the barony create additional equipment and amenities the barony please consider renting a storage unit for such shower, gate, kitchen, etc. Transporting the baronial encampment materials has been the baron & baroness's responsibility, she said, and it's already at the point where it's too much stuff for a normal SCAdian couple with an SUV or minivan to carry along with their normal camping stuff.

  1. AEthelmearc Curia Report

Fridrikr reported that the age of eligibility for entering Crown is now 18 years of age. (It was previous 21.) "Ah," Katja quipped. "So, now you can vote, fight for your country and your Crown, but you still can't drink."

  1. Proposed Baronial Policy Changes

Peregrine summarized the change she proposes for the July Baronial Curia, which would rewrite what happens in an emergency situation where a baronial officer has to step down. Right now, she said, the deputy takes over the office until the seneschale finds a replacement officer. In essence, she said, the contingency officer isn't allowed to keep the office if he or she wants to. So, she proposes changing the policy so a deputy *may* fulfill the term or the seneschale may seek a new officer.

  1. Officer Reports

Webministers: "We have a website, it works," Donal said, adding he and Sorcha will be asking for a reimbursement check to keep our domain hosting.

Chronicler: We need articles for Fewmet, please, Sorcha announced. One idea, she suggested, was writing briefly about your first event.

Chirurgeon: The website is up, so please tell me what you think of it, Phillipe asked. He thanked Carlo for helping to create the website. He also praised Fauna for her chirurgeonate work at Crown and added he hopes to get her warranted soon.

Herald: Fridrikr commented that he's been a herald for 23 years. If you have a device or name outstanding, please write to him. He sent forms after last meeting for Vettius and Padraig since he could not find the old forms in the herald file. Both names will work, he said, they’re documented. If anyone else has a name submission, Fridrikr will be happy to work on it. He also has badges submissions for Phelan and Maired. He also kicked himself for forgetting to herald for the baron and baroness at AE War Practice when he was attending the Khan. Katja laughed and told him not to worry, she and Eric kicked themselves for remembering to ask him to herald the 7 Pearls Rapier tourney but completely forgetting to ask him to herald the 7 Pearls Rattan tourney one hour earlier at the event...

Thrown Weapons: Practice is at my house, Athos said. Not many people are showing up, so please come and have fun, he has loaner gear. Since Sundays are pretty busy, he suggested having practice on Thursday or Friday nights.

Exchequer: We have $2,171.77 in checking and $3,159.76 in savings, Alina reported.

MOL: Bronwyn is available to help with the tournaments this weekend.

Rapier: Fencing is happening more often than not, Yasmina said. Practice will likely move to an alternative night for practice for summer (likely Thursday) since several people want to play both heavy and light weapons. She added she hopes someone else step up as rapier marshal in July since the inflamed tendon in her wrist has been bothering her since January.
Regarding the drop tester request, she said she plans to request the $21 needed to buy just the tip, then she'll get the pipe and the rest of the materials needed from a hardware store to build a barony drop tester. That way, she added, we'll have one when Eric steps down from the regional marshallate job and we no longer have a drop tester living in the barony.
There are now two loaner hoods, and Orianna has a third almost done. The Threadworkers may work on other ones. Before Sam was born, Siggy had created a beta gorget; he said he plans to test it this weekend at the event. Phillipe is currently a marshal in training, she added.

Rattan: We have fighting practice on Mondays, Vettius said. There is nothing substantial to report, other than one of his Legio got authorized at War Practice.

Chatelaine: Siggy said he is still getting emails from folks who are interested in joining and he is responding as best as he can with a newborn in the house. Sorcha was recently contacted by a college professor who would like us to come talk to his class on neo-medievalism, he added.
Dubheasa thanked everyone who participated in the recent charitable demo for Alternatives for Battered Women. She said the organizers were all very impressed and wanted our contact information for future demos. Katja said she wished they'd been able to dance more medieval dances, but was happy they were able to do some Middle Eastern dancing.
Siggy commented that he is starting to plan the next newcomers night (possibly June), and has several offers from different gentles to host it this time. (He wants to have three to four newcomer nights a year.) The last one was a big hit -- we picked up several new people, including one of the lunch cooks for this weekend's event!

A&S: Kadlin reminded everyone that the next social meeting will be the annual pre-Pennsic fabric and garb swap. Katja offered to bring her Turkish coat pattern, which Maired wanted to trace, and encouraged others to bring patterns for others to trace.
Due to the recent discussion on the Thescorre Yahoo list regarding chocolate milk at Coopers Lake, Caradawc brought some Bourne Dairy chocolate milk for everyone to sample. There was much rejoicing...

Archery: Speaking for Cedric, Peregrine said there won't be any practice this Sunday due to the event and the holiday, but practice has been very well attended lately!

Scribal: We are meeting tomorrow at Roberta's, Collette said, to work on the champions' scrolls for the event.

Seneschale: Four offices expire in July, Peregrine announced: steward, seneschale, thrown weapons, and rapier marshal. She is accepting officer bids.
She added that the Center is closed next Monday for Memorial Day, but practices can occur outside on the soccer field.

Court & Country Dancing: We will have a guest from An Tir next practice! There was much lamentation about the nearby ice cream shop not being open on Mondays or past 9 p.m., which is deeply inconvenient to those of us attending various practices at the recreation center.

Dance & Drum: We have a new drummer, Carlo said.

Baron & Baroness: Katja read a proclamation written by Eric:
Unto the Barony of Thescorre do Baron Eric and Baroness Katja send fond greetings.
Again the seasons turn, the lilacs blossom, the birds sing, and the horns of war are heard upon the horizon.  Our rulers Khalek Khan and Branwyn Khatun have called their banners for the forthcoming war, and Thescorre must prepare to answer that call.
Once again We summon our warriors of all martial disciplines, who intend to stand with Thescorre and AEthelmearc at the Pennsic War, to muster upon the battlefield at the Pax Interruptus event, on Saturday June 28th (time TBD) for inspection and recognition.
Eric & Katja
She added that they're willing to host a Saturday sewing circle after Pax so that we can all work on our Pennsic garb projects.
Congratulations Kadlin & Siggy on the birth of Samuel, and Bea & Dom on the birth of Max! Congratulations to Vettius & Dehka on their engagement!
When Fridrikr urged everyone to check out the new "frog cards," Katja agreed that, yes, there is a photo of Chainmail Bob. (She had asked Rufina to snap of photo of him at Ice Dragon.)
