Spring Coronation
What a day! We were thrilled to witness the elevation of Duchess Sir Rowan to the Laurel, thus making her the fourth female quadruple peer in all of Society. After swearing fealty to our new monarchs, we cheered as THL Bryn received a Haelstone from Baron Caleb for her repeated service in the Hael?s kitchens, while Baroness Roberta and Lady Nivah were named seamstresses of the court? and then rose to our feet to applaud the writ for THL Matilda to consider elevation to the Pelican!
We thank Lord Eldjarn and THL Caradawc who, upon our arrival at the event, fell immediately to setting up our thrones in time for morning Court? with Caidin?s help, of course. (Did you know that an 18th-month-old can hammer wooden chair pegs in quite exceedingly hard? So hard that it?s somewhat difficult to bang them out at the end of the day?)
In addition to being able to hang out with friends, marshal a little, and practice throwing spears, we also enjoyed hosting Countess Alethea Eastriding for the weekend. A native AEthelmartian who served as Queen of the East Kingdom up until the weekend before Coronation, she crashed with us so that she could see Rowan?s elevation, as well as convey Their (current) Majesties? of the East good tidings and well wishes to Maynard & Liadain. It is always fascinating to compare kingdom histories and practices, and we enjoyed the well-known SCA tradition of staying up far too late talking about anything and everything. Offering crash space, as we?ve said before, is not only kind and supportive of your fellow SCAdians? it?s a lot of fun!
Baronial Champs
Once again, our beloved Baronial Champions event is mere weeks away: May 22 through 24 at Tom and Diane?s home in Hemlock, N.Y.
We will hold championship tournaments this year in A&S, archery, rapier, rattan, and thrown weapons, and end the day with a court to announce the winners, followed by a potluck dinner of various pies. Once again, the bardic champion will be chosen during an evening firepit performance.
For those thinking about entering any of the tournaments, we thought it would be helpful to know our criteria for being a champion of Thescorre:
1 .The entrants must be residents of Thescorre or very active in Thescorre. However, they do not need to be paying members of the SCA.
2. They should be ready to support/represent the barony & their chosen activity in a courteous and positive manner. In other words: have fun, play nice, help others do so.
3. They will be expected to attend the baron & baroness (as their health and scheduling allows) in court at events in Thescorre, specifically walking in processions and/or guarding during court.
They are not expected or required to attend us at out-of-area events (such as Twelfth Night, Coronation, Crown, Pennsic, etc.), but are more than welcome to join us if they are present and wish to do so.
4. They should reasonably expect to attend and represent Thescorre at the 7 Pearls tournament for their category. (These are interbaronial competitions with the respective champs from each of AEthelmearc's seven baronies.)
If the champ cannot attend the tournament for any reason, they are expected to recommend a proxy champion to us as earliest before the tournament as they can, since we reasonably intend to attend each of the tournaments and cheer them on.
The 7 Pearls tournaments occur this year at:
Rattan: AEthelmearc War Practice, May 14-7 (Debatable Lands hosts the tourney)
A&S: Melee Madness, May 29-31 (Endless Hills)
Thrown Weapons: Pax Interrupta, June 26-28 (Thescorre)
Rapier: Bog Three-Day, July 10-12 (St. Swithins Bog)
Bardic: Pennsic (Blackstone Mountain hosts)
Archery: Shoote in the Wildwood, September 4-6 (Delftwood)
[There is no 7 Pearls youth championship at this time.]
5. They are expected to run or help run the next Thescorre championship tournament for their category.
As to the requirements of each championship competition, Sigvaldi is posting those specifics as we have left those up to the wisdom and preferences of the current champions/marshals running the competitions.
We encourage and welcome all gentles at the event to participate in the different activities, regardless of whether they wish to compete for a championship. If you do not wish to be considered for a championship, please simply tell the champion/marshal of that tournament not to include your scores.
Most of all, have fun!
Eric & Katja
